Thousand Palms is located in Riverside County, California, in the eastern part of Southern California.As of the 2010 census the population was 7,715 an increase of about 2,500 from the 2000 census conducted 10 years earlier.
The US Census Bureau, describes Thousand Palms as having a total land area of about 23 square miles of desert land. Furthermore in 2010, the population density was calculated to be approximately 326 inhabitants per square mile. The ethnic makeup of Thousand Palms is as follows: approximately 75% Caucasian, 1.8% Asian, 1.5% African American, 1% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and about 21.0% from other ethnicities. The same 2010 Census also reported that approximately 99% of the population lived in “households” and less than 1% lived in other type of living quarter.
During that same survey it was also published that there were 2,849 households, of the 2,849 817 or about 29% lived with children under the age of 18 years old. There were about half the total number approximately 1,431 or 50% were opposite sex married couples occupying the same residence. A smaller fraction, 314 of 2,849 approximately 11% had only a Matriarch of the household with no male head of household present. Conversely only about 151 or approximately 5% had a Patriarch or male head of household with no wife accounted for at the time of the survey. 727 homes or approximately 25% were made up of lone individuals. According to that same survey and accounting for single occupancy dwellings the average family size was about 3 members for both Matriarchal and Patriarchal households.
Lastly, as of the 2000 survey there were approximately 3,705 residential units of which 2,227 or approximately 78% were owner occupied, and 622 or about 22% were inhabited by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was about 4.5% and the rental vacancy rate was about 12%. More recently during the 2010 census survey 5,591 people or approximately 73% of the population inhabited owner occupied dwellings and 2,094 people about 27% resided in rental units.
