Torrance is a city incorporated in 1921 and located in the South Bay region of LA County, California. Torrance has approximately 1.5 miles of beaches and shoreline on the Pacific Ocean,. These beaches are quieter and less well known by many tourists than others on the Santa Monica Bay, like neighboring Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach. Torrance boasts a moderate year round climate with warm temps, low humidity and sea breezes.
The population of Torrance was about 145,000 according to the census carried out in 2010. This residential and light high-tech industries city has 90,000 street trees and 30 city parks. Known for its very low crime rates, the Torrance consistently places among the safest cities in LA County.
Fun Fact: Torrance is the birthplace of “American Youth Soccer Organization” (AYSO).
Torrance was part of the 1784 Spanish land grant for Rancho San Pedro. In the early 1900s, a real estate developer Mr. Torrance and other real estate investors saw the value in building a mixed residential and industrial community just south of Los Angeles. In a group headed by Mr. Torrance they purchased part of an old Spanish land grant and hired landscape architect to design a new planned community. Torrance was founded in October 1912 and named in Mr. Torrance’s honor. Close to a decade later the city of Torrance was formally incorporated in May of 1921. The first built residential street created in Torrance was Gramercy Ave and the second was Andreo Ave Most of the houses on these streets are now over 100 years old. Both Gramercy and Andreo avenues are located in the area commonly referred to as “Old Town Torrance.”
Rapid new population growth in Torrance began after WW II as military-related industries transformed into Aerospace manufacturers and other Defense Contractors and technology industries. Large housing developments sprung up in the late 1950s and 1960s to house the new population growth.
The Census Bureau boundaries show that Torrance city proper has a total area of 20.5 square miles that is mostly all land.
Torrance Beach is located in between the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Redondo beach right on the Santa Monica Bay. Torrance is a coastal community in southwestern LA County, sharing the climate and geographical features common to the Greater LA area.
